What we check

Our favicon checker inspects more than a dozen settings to make sure your favicon works everywhere it should. Here are the main things we look at:

Favicon files and formats

We verify that your favicon is declared with the right HTML markup and that the underlying image files exist and are reachable. We check the classic favicon.ico, the modern PNG and SVG favicons, and the dimensions of each picture to make sure they match what browsers expect.

An incorrect declaration or a missing file is one of the most common reasons a favicon does not show up at all, even though the picture itself is fine.

Google and search engines

Google and other search engines display the favicon next to your website in their result pages. We check that your favicon meets the requirements (resolution, format, ratio) for it to be picked up and displayed correctly in the SERP.

iOS and the Apple Touch icon

When a visitor adds your website to their iPhone or iPad home screen, iOS uses the Apple Touch icon. We verify that this icon is declared, that the image is at the right resolution, and that it will look sharp on Retina displays.

Android and the web app manifest

Android Chrome relies on the web app manifest to find icons for the home screen and the task switcher. We make sure your manifest is properly declared, valid, and references icons that exist and are large enough.

Why it matters

A broken favicon is rarely a critical bug, but it has a real impact on how your website is perceived. The favicon is the logo of your website and is often the very first visual a visitor sees, sometimes even before they click on your link in a Google result page.

Branding and first impressions

A blurry icon in a browser tab, a generic placeholder in the Google result page, or an ugly screenshot on an iOS home screen all send the wrong signal: that the website is not cared for. A correct favicon, on the other hand, makes your brand recognizable across every place a user might encounter it.

Visibility in search results

Since favicons appear next to your website in Google result pages, a missing or rejected favicon means your listing blends in with the rest. A properly configured favicon helps your result stand out and reinforces brand recognition for visitors who have already seen your site.

Bookmarks and home screen shortcuts

When users bookmark your site or add it to their home screen, the favicon becomes a permanent shortcut on their device. A missing or low-resolution icon turns into a daily reminder that something is off. Getting it right means your shortcut looks as polished as a native app.
